10 ways to organise and make the most of a small space

Given the price people pay for property and the state of the economy, it’s no wonder many homeowners are buying or renting small apartments and townhouses.

Buy items that can ‘multitask’ - furniture that can be used for more than one purpose at the same time.

With that said, the fact that many homeowners are living in small homes doesn’t mean they have to settle for a cramped lifestyle.

Here are tips on how to organize and make rooms feel more spacious.

1. Make wise furniture choices

Buy items that can ‘multitask’ - furniture that can be used for more than one purpose at the same time.

For example, you can buy ottomans with hidden storage and use these to pack away everyday items that tend to clutter your living spaces. You can also use these in place of a coffee table and as a decorative piece.

The same applies to buying a bed. Buying a bed with drawers in the base allows you to store bed linen without it taking up precious closet space.

2. Go the minimalist route

When shopping for your apartment or flat, only buy items that you need. Leave out unnecessary appliances and opt for household gadgets that don’t take up a lot of space.

When shopping for your apartment or flat, only buy items that you need. Leave out unnecessary appliances and opt for household gadgets that don’t take up a lot of space.

Instead of buying new decorations, use household necessities to beautify your home. For example, you can swap costly vases for a pretty salad bowl that you already own to decorate your kitchen counters.

3. Get rid of unnecessary stuff

Decluttering is the way to go if you have limited space. You can either donate items that you no longer use to someone who’ll appreciate them, or you can sell them online to make extra cash.

Don’t hoard clothing that no longer fits you, with the hope that you’ll wear these items again one day. Embrace the 'new you' and give the clothes to someone who’ll appreciate them.

4. Embrace the light

Dark colored window treatments, walls or floors make a room appear smaller, so when you choose your finishes, go for light or brightly colored items which will open up your space.

Avoid crowding window sills with unnecessary stuff, rather leave them clear so that the sun can penetrate and brighten your space.

5. Decorate with fashion accessories

Why not store items you don’t use every day in your suitcases and luggage bags?

Many women have an increasing collection of handbags and clutches. While these are a must for a stylish wardrobe, there is often not enough closet space to store them.

Instead of worrying about where to keep these and other accessories, use them to decorate your home.

6. Make use of the walls

Attach easy-to-remove hooks onto the walls so that you can hang clothing, hats, towels, bags, pot plants, kitchen utensils and more.

Place two hooks a reasonable distance apart and fasten a string onto each end. With the string in place, you can now hang up more than one item.

7. Install shelves

Install your own shelves, that way you can store and organize things in an orderly manner.

You can also utilize the space under your staircase by getting a carpenter to create some cupboards where you can store books, media gadgets, tools or sporting equipment.

8. Hang shoe organizers on a closet door

You can use your shoe organizers not just for shoe storage but for other things as well.

Just be sure to hang it inside the closet door so that it doesn’t give your space an unpleasant ‘storage look’.

Attach easy-to-remove hooks onto the walls so that you can hang clothing, hats, towels, bags, pot plants, kitchen utensils and more.

9. Utilize spaces you don’t use every day

Why not store items you don’t use every day in your suitcases and luggage bags? Just make sure that you pack them away in a plastic bag first before putting it in your suitcase. This makes it easier for when you need to use your suitcase – simply remove the plastic bag and you’re ready to go.

10. Store items under the bed

If your bed isn’t high enough, get a bed lift or make your own using neatly covered concrete blocks.

Alternatively, you can use containers or baskets with lids, install drawers with wheels or reuse a blanket bag to store surplus cleaning supplies, seasonal ware, books or equipment under the bed.

Additional tip

In addition to these ten tips, also make sure that your home is always neat and tidy. Having clutter all over a tiny apartment makes it look even smaller.
