16 easy tips for stunning curtains and window treatments

Curtains have a history almost as long as textiles, and there is always much hesitation about where and how to hang them.

Not only are sheer curtains beautiful but they are also delicate and elegant.

We’ve all had our own frustrating experiences when we bought ready-made curtains. They tend not to fit perfectly and end up being tossed aside – an expensive reminder that it’s important to measure before you buy window treatments.

Here are a few things when to remember when it comes to window and curtain treatments:

1. Always hang curtains as close to the ceiling as possible.

2. Don’t worry about your windows being too large. Any window can be dressed using blinds or curtains, or left as they are to act as a feature.

3. You can combine blinds and curtains on the same window. You can pair mock blinds or vision blinds with mock curtains.

4. Remember to choose curtains that complement the rest of your furniture.

5. Make sure you get proper fullness when hanging your curtains. When the fullness isn’t enough, curtains tend to look skimpy.

Full curtains create elegance and tend to make a space more chic. You can achieve proper fullness with tie backs and hold backs.

6. Next to paint, curtains can make the biggest change in a room.

7. Homeowners should consider curtains with an outdoor theme. We tend to tame nature, but why not bring it indoors? It can be romantic.

Any windows can be dressed using blinds or curtains, or left as they are to act as a feature.

8. If you have rooms in your home that get direct sunlight, shop for block out curtains which can reduce the light entering your home.

9. Not only are sheer curtains beautiful but they are also delicate and elegant.

10. Light-coloured curtains will create a stunning, intimate atmosphere inside your home.

11. Bay windows are a beautiful feature so they don’t have to be covered with window treatments. If you’d like to highlight this type of window then why not frame it in window or place a special couch in front of it.

You could also place stickers on the window to create a feature-like wall.

12. When dressing windows, little details make a big difference so use rods, toppers, trims and tiebacks to complete your window's look.

Introduce a pattern to break up a solid colour palette and add visual interest to a room.

13. Create a bit of interest and contrast to make your curtains or drapes stand out. This can be achieved by either using patterned fabric or wallpaper that makes your window treatments pop.

4. Introduce a pattern to break up a solid color palette and add visual interest to a room.

15. Play with the texture of materials, so you can add dimension to your room’s design.

16. Add drama to your room by manipulating the length of your curtains. For a casual, understated look, go for curtains that reach just below the windowsill.

If you’re aiming for a softer, more romantic look, choose extra-long curtains that pool on the floor.
