One man’s trash is another’s treasure, so goes the adage. In an age where “upcycling,” “vintage,” and “DIY” are the trendy it-words of homemaking, second-hand furniture take on a renewed vitality in the market, where their cheaper cost, vintage appeal, and environmental value (reuse and recycle, as they say), are welcomed as a coveted style and statement. Look to these three places in assembling a pre-loved, vintage look in your home:

The hip horseshoe in Cubao has vintage specialty stores that sell antique, retro, and second-hand furnishings. Peruse to your heart’s content: crowed, dim and musty – the mark of a true trove of vintage finds – the stores spew forth everything from kitschy outdated telephones to vinyl record players, vintage trunks and chests, antique glassware, art nouveau curios, Coke memorabilia, and other trinkets and curious odds and ends.

Another enclave in Cubao, this space specializes in arts ‘n crafts, including unique, upcycled furniture and decorations for the home. Hand-made by local artisans and workshops, the pieces are commissioned for exhibition and sale at the space. 10a Alabama hosts arts ‘n crafts fairs on certain weekends – be sure to drop in to view a selection of truly unique and crafty finds.

A residential area that doubles as a thrift store destination, Bangkal has an assortment of second-hand items, ranging from pricey designer pieces to affordable finds of an eclectic mix. Furniture, clothes, books and printed matter, electronic equipment, collectors’ items, ornaments, various trinkets, and specialty objects line the streets for a veritable ukay-ukay extravaganza.
