While there are many fresh and creative ways of decorating your home interiors, there are also just as many design pitfalls to avoid. Get tips...
1. Inappropriate & inefficient lighting
Lighting plays a major role in any room design. From a functional perspective, insufficient lighting and overly bright lights may harm the eyes, particularly for work areas such as kitchen countertops and work desks. For these spaces sufficient task lighting is needed.
On the other hand, lighting also affects a room’s ambiance. The brightness and color of a lighting fixture can make or break a room's design. Opt for warm white lights for general lighting as this renders a gentle coloring throughout your interior space.
2. Coordinated furniture & matching prints
Coordinated sets of furniture, as in living room sofas and armchairs or dining room chairs, look predictable and boring. Go for pieces that relate to each other or balance each other out, as opposed to identical furniture. Avoid using matching prints for upholstery, window treatments and wallpaper as this creates a dull look.
3. Bland & predictable colors
Don’t be afraid to experiment with bold and vibrant colors. While beige colored walls and white painted furniture have always been reliable and safe options, try working with colors that you love or at least, something vibrant. A color palette you can resonate with will make for a beautiful decorating foundation for your home.
No matter how stylish your furniture pieces and accessories, a cluttered home will overshadow all of this. Stow away the things you don’t need so as not to clutter up the space and distract from the design. Displayed personal collections may also be blown out of proportions. Allot a space for your collection and stick to a visually appealing number of displays. Don’t add any more pieces without taking out the same number of pieces.
