4 design tips for lofts

Even with today’s compact home and condo trends, many homeowners still favor the luxury and quality space that lofts offer.

Protruding columns and sloping walls are common design challenges one has to face. Maximize these awkward spaces by employing storage options and decorative niches in these areas.

Incorporating and designing a room with high ceilings and expansive walls can be a challenge, especially when you don’t know where to start.

Here are four design tips to consider…

1. Stair space and location

A loft will inevitably require some space for the stairs. For small homes, it’s important to keep the stair space as small as possible, perhaps with the use of compact spiral staircases. However, for larger houses, the stairs can actually become the main attraction.

Opt for circular or U-shaped stairs that hug the walls and go around the middle area for full effect. Choose interesting architectural designs for a modern look or intricate style for a more traditional vibe.

To ensure safety, the stairs are best designed with the help of an architect or interior designer.

2. Awkward spaces

Since lofts are usually tucked away in the upper corners of homes, you may have to deal with some awkward spaces. Protruding columns and sloping walls are common design challenges one has to face. Maximize these awkward spaces by employing storage options and decorative niches in these areas.

3. Sound absorption

When incorporating a loft in your home, avoid wooden floors as these may be noisy for those below. Cushion the floors, add insulation and use sound absorbing materials to create a more comfortable atmosphere.

4. Privacy

Consider privacy. Privacy from the outside can be achieved with window treatments. However, depending on the use of the room, you may also want it to be separated from the space below. Glass partitions provide a separation of space without sacrificing the open feel that often characterizes a loft.

Use drapes on the glass partitions so you can close off the loft as you please.
