A makeover with fabricAll you'll need are some cleaning materials, measuring implements, liquid starch, scissors, and the fabric of your choice. Start by cleaning the stairs. Measure each riser and cut a rectangle of fabric for each, allowing for a 1- to 2-inch margin. Soak the fabric in liquid starch by dunking it in a bucket or basin. Apply the fabric on the riser, smoothing it out using your fingers. Let it dry and cut off the excess fabric at the edges.Using decalsA trend that surfaced recently, decals also provide a fairly affordable means to easily redecorate your staircase. Simply choose the design you want -- or have it made, at a printer -- and stick it on the riser on each step.Spray away with stencilsStencils, too, are ultra-cheap. You can make a full set yourself with just some cardboard and a box cutter. Customize the stencil to your heart's content. Finally, using some spray paint, spray the design onto the risers on your staircase. Best place old newspapers or rags on the steps to prevent them from getting any paint.Say something with chalkboardsMake a statement -- literally -- with each step you take. Use black chalkboard paint on the risers and paint your motto, life philosopy, or favorite quote using other colorful shades of chalk paint. Alternatively, you can also install actual chalkboards on the risers, and use colorful chalk for the words.
