When designing your own space, people tend to prioritize the basics. Once the essentials are in, like the furniture, curtains and bathroom fixtures, most deem their space finished. What the space lacks though is personality.
Accenting with furniture pieces
If you’re the more adventurous and edgy type and you have the luxury of space, then go ahead and pick out a wacky piece of furniture to accent your space. Be it a hand-shaped chair, a dog-shaped pillow or a letter-shaped bookshelf, go wild with the furniture piece and keep everything else muted - and there you go - a space that reflects your personality.
Accenting with bold colors
Having a bright and bold color as the accent for your room is a good option because you can control how crazy or how subtle it can be. Painting your walls bright green and keeping everything else neutral will definitely be a good accent. On the other hand, having white walls with one singular brightly-colored couch and keeping everything else white as well, is a more muted option but still very chic.
Accenting with patterns
As with using colors as accents, using patterns will also give you freedom to go as crazy as you can or stay as muted as you deem necessary. A simple striped pattern will give you a subtle accent and will still give you freedom to do whatever you want to the rest of the room. However, having a bold pattern such as a damask pattern will be enough of an accent for the whole room.
So whenever you feel like your space is a little bland, try going through the different methods on placing accents and you might find your perfect fit. - Michelle Alyssa Tiu
