Bedroom lighting 101

Often thought of as the most personal space in the home, the bedroom serves as the place for rest and relaxation away from life's daily stresses and strains. Lighting helps create a soothing vibe and plays an important role in any room design, providing necessary illumination and creating a beautiful ambiance.

The bedside is the most important area for task lighting. Having an easy-access lighting fixture, which you can turn off before you go to bed, is of utmost importance in the bedroom.

Read on for some pointers on proper bedroom lighting...

Layers of light

In creating an interesting ambiance in any room, it is essential to use different kinds of lighting and layer them together. This will form a dramatic play of lights and shadows, highlighting your accent pieces while having ample lighting throughout the room.

General lighting

Provide sufficient lighting across the room with general lighting. One popular lighting trick for general light is the use of cove lights in the middle of the room. This creates an interesting recessed ceiling design while providing a soft, soothing glow. Add some pin lights in dark corners of the room for effective illumination.

Bedside

The bedside is the most important area for task lighting. Having an easy-access lighting fixture, which you can turn off before you go to bed, is of utmost importance in the bedroom. This way, you’ll avoid groping through the darkness just to get to your bed. It can also light your last-minute tasks such as reading, checking messages on your phone or drinking a glass of water. Choose a pair of table lamps to adorn your bedside tables, or if you’re looking for a space-saving lighting solution, opt for wall sconces instead.

Desk

Provide sufficient lighting across the room with general lighting.

Some bedrooms have desks for doing take-home work or simpler tasks such as sorting mail and bills. Whatever the function of your bedroom desk, it is important to employ suitable lighting for your needs. A desk lamp can suffice for simple tasks and office work such as typing and surfing the web. If your work involves drawing, drafting or other eye-straining activities, look for drafting lamps or fixtures with higher wattage.

Seating

Bigger bedrooms have seating or a reading nook integrated in the space. For a full-fledged seating area with sofa, seats and a coffee table, you may opt for a centrally located pendant light to provide necessary light and to anchor the space as well.

Reading nook

If you have a reading nook setup with an armchair and a side table, a suitable lighting option is a table lamp or a floor lamp located beside your armchair’s back corner. This will provide adequate lighting without creating shadows that can strain your eyes.

Accent lighting

Highlight interesting pieces in the bedroom with accent lighting. Use track lighting to light textured walls and wall art, and can lights for book collections and other display items.
