Common Toxins in the Home

Your home should be a safe haven for you and your loved ones. Take note of these common household toxins and make sure you clear your home of these substances for your health and wellbeing.

Lead paint
Every household is at risk of suffering from the harmful effects of lead-based paints. According to news reports and medical journals, lead paint affects young children, creating problems with their brain, kidneys, blood cells, and even their central nervous systems. It would be prudent to ensure that the paint you buy and use on your home is lead-free.

Polycarbonate plastics
Plastics are common in our consumer society, which is why we should be more discerning when it comes to their long-term use and storage. As a general rule, it is harmful to re-use disposable plastic containers. Plastics contain Bisphenol A, which according to medical experts disrupts natural human hormones especially among small children.

Terpenes and Glycol Ethers in air fresheners and other cleaning solutions
Found in air fresheners and other cleaning solutions, these substances are often used to clean dirt and grime, a must in every home. However, concentrated doses of ethylene-based glycol ethers or terpenes in unventilated areas can create a poisonous environment similar to or worse than the toxic levels released by pollutants.

Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers in fire extinguishers
Fire retardants may be harmful to your health due to the polybrominated diphenyl ethers used to make them. Exposure to this chemical has been reported to cause memory loss and disrupted thyroid functions in smaller mammals, among other detrimental effects.

Plasticizers and Pthalates in cosmetic products
Many shampoos, lotions, deodorants, and perfumes contain harmful plasticizers or phthalates that can possibly affect our reproductive and developmental capacities, according to some research. If you’d rather be thoroughly safe with your options, get all-natural products instead.
