The idea of mixing styles seems intimidating, but it is the most natural thing to do since no one is full-out traditional, shabby chic or contemporary.
Here’s how to pull off a unique look for your home…
Keep to a limited color scheme
The easiest way to cheat your way to fabulous décor is to use similar colors and hues around the apartment, from the furniture to the accessories. Too many colors can be distracting, and make it difficult to focus. Worse, it may cause the eye to focus on the wrong thing. Keep it together - start with the colors.
Balance it out
Make bigger or more interesting pieces the main focal point. If one side feels heavier, move things around until there's a sense of visual balance. The balance also applies to style. If one side of the apartment is a little more modern than the other, move things around until both sides look and feel right.
Keep shapes uniformed
Décor pieces should have matching lines and shapes. Meet linear furniture and accessories with other linear furniture and décor pieces, rolled armed sofas with other rolled pieces and so on. Like colors, find things that repeat a curve or line throughout the room. This keeps the décor from looking scattered.
If you must, yes, break the rules
Some of the best art in history comes from rule-breaking. If it feels too stiff and stuffy, you can break the rules and decorate your home as you please. The results may surprise you.
