Compact homes have become more common these days, with real estate developers offering studio units as small as 20 square meters. When faced with such a challenge, homeowners should think of creative ways to maximize their space and fit all their needs into their home. However, one doesn’t have to look far or think of out-of-the-box ideas. By simply choosing appropriate furniture you could do wonders. Here's how...
When shopping for furniture, always choose pieces with slim profiles. For instance, opt for a slim, mid-century modern or Scandinavian loveseat instead of a traditional sofa with bulky rolled arms and multi-cushion backs. These generous proportions are definitely more comfortable but will take up more space. Go for smaller proportions and use a throw pillow for added comfort instead.
Up against the walls
When it comes to tight and narrow spaces, it’s best to flush furniture against the walls. This will free up sight lines and make the room look bigger. Use up vertical space if you must. Install bookshelves and mount the TV on the walls. Arranging your furniture along the perimeter of the room will create a sense of openness.
Transparent materials such as glass provide structure and function without much visual weight. Go for glass front cabinets and glass shelves to extend sight lines. You may also use glass in the middle of the room in the form of a glass coffee table.
Storage options are often insufficient in small spaces. Look for furniture pieces that have hidden storage to maximize the function of an area. Choose ottomans with built-in storage and tables with drawers. For built-in furniture, go for built-in storage under the beds and banquet seats.
