How to create different looks with neutral coloured furniture

Many people think that the only means to update the look of your home is through renovation. It’s not so. Actually, it need not be expensive either. You can transform the entire feel and look of a room by simply adding, removing and changing accent pieces.

But creating all these looks relies on having flexible and versatile pieces that can be updated. And the best way to do that is to invest in furniture that will work with any look. Firstly, buy your foundation pieces in a neutral palette or in basic colours such as white, gray, beige or black. (Choosing black for all of your pieces may be a bit tricky. Just make sure that the pieces you do buy fit well into any given space to avoid making it look too big and bulky for a room.)

Here are several looks that you can build around your existing future and how you can achieve them.

1. Bohemian Chic – Everyone loves that casual, free-spirited vibe of bohemian homes. This eclectic look is all about colours, prints and patterns. Throw this look together by placing a quirky, patterned rug under a table and colourful, mismatched pillows on the sofa. Psychedelic lamps and fringed fabric will be perfect accents as well.

2. Coastal – Bring the beach lifestyle into the city. The palette for this look revolves mostly around blue and sea-greens, conjuring the soothing colours of the sea. Incorporate little design details that reflect that nautical look: beach pebbles, star fish and such.

3. Modern Minimalist – In this case, less is definitely more. Remove all unnecessary clutter and make sure that what remains is spotless. Bring light into the room by opening up windows and wisely using glass and mirrors. Limit colours to a well-chosen artwork to be hung in the living room.

4. Tropical – Easily transform into this room by bringing in lovely plants and blooms. Opt for palm-like plants. Also incorporate more “organic” accents like pieces made from wicker, bamboo and hemp to create that more “earthy” look.
