How to spot a safe neighborhood

A key consideration in the home buying process is the safety of the property’s surrounding areas. Having the peace of mind that you live in a safe and secure environment is an invaluable aspect in home ownership.

Check neighboring houses to see if they’ve employed extra security measures such as hiring security guards, using CCTV cameras, building high perimeter walls and installing electrical fences and barbed wires.

It is best to therefore assess the safety level of a prospective neighborhood before you commit to the purchase. Here’s how…

Scout the area at different times of the day

Visit your potential home and its surrounding neighborhood during the day and at night to get a better feel of its safety.

Are the streets well lit at night? Are there suspicious people lurking around the streets or groups drinking on street corners? These are valid questions that will be answered as you get to know the area better by visiting it more.

Don’t be afraid to ask around either. The best people to ask about an area’s safety and security are the long-time residents.

Check security measures in nearby homes

Long-time residents in a particular neighborhood would have the best idea of the dangers present in the area.

Check neighboring houses to see if they’ve employed extra security measures such as hiring security guards, using CCTV cameras, building high perimeter walls and installing electrical fences and barbed wire.

Chances are, the more houses that are equipped with these security measures, the more potential danger there is in the neighborhood.

Check if there are informal settlers nearby

A primary factor in the safety of a neighborhood is the presence of informal settlers.

Some neighborhoods with informal settlers tend to get rowdy at night with drunken fights and noisy karaoke singers. Most city areas surrounded by informal settlers are also prone to infractions such as pickpockets and thieves.
