One of the best things about owning your own home is the freedom to design and decorate it as you please. For wine lovers, a definite must-have in the home is wine storage. There are many options available, particularly if you’re considering custom built-in storage systems. However, there are several factors you need to consider when it comes to proper wine storage. Get tips...
Wine is sensitive to light so don't store it near a window or under any direct light as this can alter the taste of the wine. Particularly sensitive to light are white wines in clear glass bottles. If there’s no other storage place, consider building a niche wall. This way, the wine bottles won’t be under direct light.
Heat is also bad for wine. Keep your wine storage away from stoves or other heat-generating appliances. Wine is also sensitive to fluctuations in temperature, so it’s best to place it well away from cooking areas.
Wines are also sensitive to vibration. Putting your wines on top of the refrigerator may seem like a neat, space-saving solution, but this can be bad for the wine. On the other hand, you may opt to store your wines in a wine refrigerator, which doesn’t have vibration.
If you have a kid at home, it’s best to store your wines at a higher level, out of your child’s reach. Since wine bottles are breakable, avoid putting freestanding wine racks along main passage ways, particularly sharp corners.
