How to use the space under your stairs

Under stair space usually gets wasted as more often than not, it is difficult to manipulate because of the low ceiling height, small area and the awkward shape. However, there are ways of maximizing these awkward spaces.

Here's how you can incorporate them in your own home.

For a huge under stair space, you might even be able to fit a powder room. Having one near the main door will make it convenient for you and your guests to make a last pit stop before you leave the house.

For houses with two or more floors, the stairs on the first floor are usually located near the entrance of the home. In this case, think of using the under stair space for things that should be by the door.

  • If you and your family often switch to house slippers as soon as you get home, a shoe closet integrated to the bottom of your stairs could do wonders. It will keep your shoes out of sight and stored properly. Depending on how much room you have under the stairs, you may opt for built-in cabinets or a fully fledged walk-in shoe closet. You may also add a built-in bench for a comfortable perch as you put on your shoes.

  • A neat and compact foyer can also be a great addition to your entryway. Some essentials for this include a console table, a wall mirror and some lighting. Wall sconces often do the trick. Make sure the console table has some storage for mail, car keys and the like.

  • For a huge under stair space, you might even be able to fit a powder room. Having one near the main door will make it convenient for you and your guests to make a last pit stop before you leave the house.

For other areas of the home such as a living room or a bedroom, under stair space should be something that complements the function and style of the given room.

  • There can never be too much storage in any room. Having built-in cabinets or drawers under the stairs will maximize the space effectively. For a tiny bedroom with insufficient closet and wardrobe space, built-in drawers can function as a chest of drawers.

  • A built-in bookshelf under the stairs is a great option for the book lover. This can also transform your under stair space to a wonderfully stylish feature in the home. Choose an interesting shelving design and mix some accessories with your book display to create a beautiful composition.

  • A reading nook, whether built-in or using a comfortable chaise lounge, is perfect for the small and cozy space under the stairs. For a built-in reading corner, add some bookshelves beside the seat for easy access to your favorite reads. - Aislinn Kee
