Carmaggedon – the term used for the horrendous traffic that Metro Manila
experiences – is not longer limited to the Christmas season and days leading to a long weekend. Unfortunately, it’s becoming something so regular, we’ve begun to accept is another pain that we have to endure on a daily basis, like sardine-squished MRT trains and buses.
With Metro Manila seeing over 7 million people every day, many of who commute from places as far as Novaliches, Bulacan
, commuting has become such a dread for professionals. Even for those who choose to go to work using their own personal vehicles.
Considering that it takes twice (if not thrice) the normal time to get to your destination, and that others spend sometimes spend more than four hours commuting (combined hours going to and from work),moving closer to your work place seems to be a sound, practical decision.
Why? We share other reasons why moving closer to your office may be better for your sanity.
1. Moving closer to the work place means less time on the road and more time spent with your family and at home. Quality time well spent is key to a healthy work-life balance.
2. With more time before and after work since you will need less time to commute, you can focus on other activities that are good for your well-being, activities that you usually put off because of the lack of time. Use this time to meditate, exercise and even make your own healthy meals. Everyone knows how fast food has become the pitfall of many starved commuters
3. When you compute your monthly expenses spent on commuting, sometimes the chunk of your transportation expenses are better spent on paying rent or paying for a condo or apartment nearer your office. Save on toll fees, parking fees and volatile gas prices.
4. As crowded as Manila seems to be, there are places that can , indeed, still fit your budget. Many condominiums from renowned developers like Ayala Land
, DMCI Homes
, and Megaworld Corporation
offer low downpayments and flexible payment schemes.
Of course, there are disadvantages as well, such as the fact that the scenery in the “suburbs” of Metro Manila is quite different from the congested, high rises of the business district. Also, transporting the entire family may be difficult considering schools and etc.
But the bottom line question is, what sacrifices are you willing to make to ensure that you live a satisfying, quality life. What is your time worth?
