Make DIY projects a family affair

Is your family into DIY projects? Is the house crying out for some much needed attention? Do you need to spend quality time with the kids? What better way to address all of the above than turning a home improvement project into a family affair.

Depending on the age of your children, there will almost always be some job that they can perform even if it’s only nominating paint color choices or playing assistant to mom or dad.

Getting the whole family involved in some household activity, young kids included, is not only a great way to spend quality time with them, it opens up an opportunity for the kids to learn about family dynamics.

Allowing them to perform tasks relating to the care of the home and the needs of family members makes children feel valuable. It also instills a sense of responsibility and competence.

Some might think that home improvement projects are better left to the adults or that it would be quicker, easier and even safer to not involve your kids. That is partly true. But, there are many occasions where the participation of the young ones is not only acceptable, it might actually be important.

Still unsure whether you ought to give it a try? Think about it. Turning a home improvement project into a family affair is winning idea because:

  1. It’s a great excuse to bond.

  2. It will allow everyone to have a say. Naturally, mom or dad will have veto powers, families are rarely democracies after all - at least not when it comes to home improvement.

  3. Having toiled on it, family members will have sweat equity, will derive pride from the result of their labors, and possibly develop a continuing interest.

Depending on the age of your children, there will almost always be some job that they can perform even if it’s only nominating paint color choices or playing assistant to mom or dad.

Think about the projects you’ve been lining up and somewhere in there are tasks your kids can handle. If you haven’t undertaken a project with the whole family before, start with something small and ease everyone into it.
