Modern kitchen designs look clean and sleek, but there is more to this seemingly simple aesthetic. Sometimes, it is more difficult to exercise restraint on using décor and details in these designs. Modern styles always exhibit a balance between sleek and plain, and there’s a fine line between the two. However, when implemented successfully, a modern kitchen is a great feature in any home. With the pared down look of modern design, one should go back to the basics and look to fundamental elements for inspiration.
One distinctive element of the modern kitchen includes clean and straight lines. There’s a marked inclination towards square corners and angular edges, making for a decidedly sharp look. To make the style friendlier and less imposing, go for linear elements. Horizontal lines create a more relaxed and laid-back atmosphere. Achieve the linear look with extensive open shelves and drawers, as these create more horizontal lines.
For traditional cabinetry design, the more detailed, the better. However, when it comes to modern styles, the opposite is true. Modern design favors neat and sprawling spaces and planes, so cabinets are best left seamless and almost invisible. Hidden drawer handles and flush doors establish the modern aesthetic.
Clean and clutter-free
The essence of the modern kitchen lies in its clean look. It only follows, that counter surfaces should be clutter-free, and open shelving should be immaculately organized. In a modern kitchen, the simple look will only make clutter look more obtrusive. For most people, this might be the more challenging aspect to this design style.
Modern kitchens look best with solid colors. There are two main routes to go to for color options. A neutral color scheme is very popular because of its flexibility; it can create a masculine vibe with the contrast of stainless steel, black and white or a more organic feel with wood tones and natural colors. The other route is by way of bright colors, which is a complete departure from the neutral color scheme. Use bright and warm colors such as yellow, red and orange to whet the appetite. Integrate these colors in your kitchen backsplash or for a more extensive display of color, use them on the cabinet and drawer surfaces.
Because of the modern kitchen’s crisp look, there is more opportunity to play with different and interesting materials. The bare-bones beauty of modern design evokes simplicity and allows these materials to shine in their own right. For a modern, luxurious feel opt for white marble and rich wood finishes. You may also go for a more casual and subdued look with Scandinavian-inspired wood finishes such as oak, beech and pine. Glass is another great material to add shine and texture variation to the kitchen. - Aislinn Kee
