Powder room design

There is nothing quite like a beautiful and carefully thought of powder room to make your guests feel special and right at home.

If you’d rather have wall sconces, install a pair flanking the wall mirror and create a wall composition reminiscent of a luxurious vanity area.

Since the powder room is typically a small space not often visited by the same people, it can be a great opportunity to flex your design muscles and go for a bold and dramatic style.

Bold colors and patterns

The easiest way to dress up your powder room is by using a rich color or a bold pattern. Vibrant hues create a unique impression and ambiance. You may opt to use semi-gloss or gloss paint to reflect your lighting design or the natural light from a nearby window. This lends drama and a sense of elegance and polish to the space.

Since the powder room is not exposed to as much humidity as its counterparts with full showers and tubs, there is no harm in using unusual bathroom material such as wallpaper. Choose a pattern that best represents the style and sets the right tone for your powder room.

Essentials made interesting

There are really only two powder room essentials: the lavatory and the water closet. But these two functional items can also add to the design appeal of your powder room.

There is a wide range of decorative lavatories available in the market today. Counter-mounted lavatories in particular are popular for powder rooms, but ultimately, it still depends on your chosen style. Whichever type of lavatory you choose, one of the ways to make it instantly stylish is to make it look like accent furniture. Go by way of the Victorian style with cabriole legs or incorporate some Chinese fretwork and match it with chinoiserie patterns - the possibilities are endless.

The water closet in itself is not a decorative feature. However, breaking the space and building a curved alcove or an arch as an entryway to the water closet area will make the space look bigger and more dramatic.

Alluring lights and additions

Finally, cap off the look with your lighting as the statement piece. Interesting pendant lights and chandeliers can do the trick. Some brilliant additions your guests are sure to appreciate are fresh flowers and a tray of candles and scented soap.

Creating a beautiful home is a challenging process, with many considerations to keep in mind, but one of the marks of a carefully planned and well thought of residence lies in the design of the powder room. - Aislinn Kee
