Cleaning isn't fun for anybody, but there are ways to do it without getting overwhelmed. When done correctly, everything can be cleaned out in as little as 20 minutes, even less if you do a little at a time each day.
Here’s where to start…
1. Get your materials ready
For a small apartment, you’ll need a basic broom, dustpan, a pail, some rags, a sponge, powdered or liquid cleaner, toilet brush and toilet cleaner.
2. Empty the trash
Even the most unkempt of tenants know this. Empty the trash and replace the trash bag. For an extra measure, spray air freshener into the trashcan before lining it.
Start from the innermost room and work your way to the room closest to the door. Don't miss the corners. You may have to move furniture up and around to get there. Use a vacuum cleaner if you're pressed for time.
4. Dust off
Get a rag, dampen it a bit, and wipe off the surfaces of shelves, tables, and counters. Don't forget the surfaces behind closed doors such as cupboards, cabinets, and drawers. Empty out what you can from there, and do a quick wipe.
5. Mop it up
Fill up a pail with water and a few drops of liquid cleaner. Mop up the floors.
6. Clean the bathroom
Pick up hair over the drain with a tissue. For smaller bathrooms, you can just splash a pail of water with cleaner over the tiles and give it a little scrub. For bigger bathrooms, you’ll have to mop up properly.
7. Clean the toilet
Give the bowl a thorough brush towards the u-bend. Flush the dirt down. Put in toilet cleaner. Leave it in.
8. Clean out the fridge
Throw out expired food. Defrost if needed. Use a new rag with a solution of vinegar and water, or water and baking soda to wipe the shelves and walls inside.
9. Empty the trash
You’re back where you started.
