1. Remove the drawers and the sliding mechanisms. We will no longer need them for this project in particular, but you may choose to keep the drawers for another future DIY project. Perhaps turning them into floating shelves and/ or jewelry cases?2. Finely sand down the surface of the chest to remove the old paint job. This is a necessity to ensure that the new coat of paint will last. If you are content with its current look, no need to update the color.3. Add a base of ply wood where the drawers used to be. Then reinforce the sides so that it can bear weight properly.4. Apply the new paint job. Don’t forget to seal it with varnish. For something modern, try dark chalk paint with a wax finish.5. You can use your new shelf as is or buy baskets that would fit perfectly. For a modern touch, buy woven, burlap baskets like those found in Pottery Barn.6. Another means to hide the clutter of your shelf is to attach a curtain rod across the top. Slide the curtain – you can purchase them at the home section of the department store, and then adjust the length – to cover the eye sore clutter.
