Should you buy a swimming pool?

A pool can be a great addition to your home, providing a perfect place to relax, exercise, entertain guests and cool off during the warm season. However, is a pool right for you? Here are a number of factors to consider before taking the plunge.

If you’re considering buying a pool, you may already have a budget in mind. However, new technologies and materials can inflate prices, so finding a reputable pool builder and discussing costs is important.

1. Budget

If you’re considering buying a pool, you may already have a budget in mind. However, new technologies and materials can inflate prices, so finding a reputable pool builder and discussing costs is important.

Also consider the pool’s size, shape and systems during this process.

2. Decide on the purpose

Will your pool serve mainly as a new place to exercise? Will you be using it to entertain guests? Or do you just want a quiet area to relax after a long week? Knowing what you’re going to use the pool for will help you decide on it’s shape, size and what needs to be built around it, such as a lounging area for guests or a small shower at the edge of a lap pool.

3. Design the area

When installing a pool, you’re not just building a pool for your yard; you’re building a whole new area for your house. Trees, plants and other installations in your yard have to be pool friendly.

Trees that have extended root systems or create a lot of yard clutter aren’t the best to have around a pool, and potential safety hazards in and around the swimming area need to be identified.

4. Anticipate long-term costs

While the installation itself can be costly, the upkeep of a pool may also be a financial strain. Work with your pool builder to create one that fits your needs and financial capacity. Eco-friendly and low-energy swimming pools may help with water costs, and you also need to consider cleaning and all your pool accessories, i.e. covers and filters.
