Staging a Modern Flat: Part 1

According to Dwell, modern is the "in" look of the decade. A modern home -- and, by extension, a modern lifestyle -- is often associated with upward mobility. It’s a statement, a message: "I've made it."

Staging a home -- or in this case, a flat -- into an icon of this life is a potent marketing tactic. It's aspirational: it's not just selling a space; it's selling a lifestyle, a self-image -- chic, urbane, hip, cool, effortless. You're packaging the home to communicate this aspirational ascent to your audience.

Flats are by far the preferred choice for young, forward-looking upstarts and professionals in the market to buy or rent. There's a bunch of tried-and-tested tips in transforming these spaces into paragons of the hip, chic, urban modern life. In general, however, minimalism is the essence and spirit of modern decor. Be sure to stick by this rule of thumb.

Clean and simple design
Clean lines, simple design. Choose furniture and decor with no frills. Do away with big, bulky couches, for instance. Same goes for space-consuming desks and looming cabinets, especially if they were made with dark, mottled, and imposing wood. Say goodbye to ornate knobs on doors, drawers, cupboards and cabinets: replace them with simpler, newer designs. Remove and stow away any existing furniture and that screams “rustic,” “old,” and “outdated.” Anything ornate and antique will stick out like a sore thumb, so opt for clean, streamlined pieces.

Keeping it simple
Modern is all about minimalism. It’s the rule of thumb; it’s the essence of the look. So don’t overdo the decor -- keep the space clean and uncluttered.
