The psychology of colors

The use of color is a great way to infuse any room with a particular ambiance. This is because every color has a unique energy unlike any other. The energy each color brings to a room can actually also affect the occupant’s mind and body, on a subconscious level.

From energizing to soothing colors, know the emotional characteristics of each color to better decide what color to use in the different rooms in your house.

Red

Red is an energizing color. It is usually associated with strength and passion, and with anger and aggression for negative attributes. It is an eye-catching and exciting color. Red can stimulate the mind and body to increase blood circulation. It enhances determination and motivation. However, being surrounded by too much red can cause irritation and aggression.

Orange

Generally, warm colors are more exciting, whereas cool colors are found to be soothing. Orange is another stimulating color, but this time for the appetite. A combination of red and yellow, orange also combines the passionate energy of red with the cheerfulness of yellow, creating an optimistic and uplifting mood.

Yellow

The color yellow is associated with the intellect, the will and the ego, and can help with decision-making. Yellow also evokes cheerfulness and optimism, thereby inspiring enthusiasm and uplifting the spirit. It stimulates the nerves and purifies the body.

Green

Associated with balance and harmony, green calls to mind the peace found in nature and creates a relaxing and rejuvenating atmosphere free from stress. It is the color of spring and growth, rebirth and renewal. Being a mixture of yellow and blue, green offers the mental clarity of yellow and the soothing peace of blue.

Blue

Blue is the color of peace and loyalty. Its calming nature evokes a sense of serenity and relaxation. The color blue encourages a slow, leisurely pace, thereby lowering blood pressure and slowing the heart rate. - Aislinn Kee
