Decorating your home can be quite a challenge, particularly if you're not planning on hiring an interior designer or decorator. Here are four top design dos and don’ts to create a beautiful home without the help of a professional.
1. Do leave some breathing space
Your immediate solution to space planning may be flushing all furniture against the walls to maximize space. This may vary from one room to another, but in general, leaving some space to breathe against the walls and grouping furniture together will help make a room look well-put together. Pick a few, good-quality furniture pieces to avoid overcrowding.
2. Don’t match everything
Avoid using the exact same fabric on your curtains and furniture upholstery, or employing identical sofas and armchairs in one seating area. Allow for some variety to keep things interesting. The idea is to choose colors, patterns and furniture that prescribe to the particular theme you’ve decided on. Relate different pieces according to motif or color.
3. Do create a focal point
Appoint a distinct focal point in the room. Ideally, this focal point should be the wow factor in the room, which can be achieved by using a contrasting, vibrant color or luxurious texture. This focal point can be the headboard in a bedroom or the range hood in a kitchen. Avoid having too many focal points that distract from each other, so choose one focal point, and employ other elements as complementing features.
4. Don’t disregard details
Small details matter. Moldings and trimming add subtle texture to walls. Floor finishes are important foundations in a room design and furniture details such as piping edges and studded nail heads add subtle character to a room. When choosing furniture and accessories, pay attention to details as well. These can add a surprising twist to a room’s interiors.
