Vintage Fair: Kamuning & Cubao

When wanting to furnish a house or an office, timeless elegant pieces are hard to get by. Timeless elegant pieces that come inexpensive are almost non-existent.

Or so we thought. Contrary to popular belief, there are shops that offer vintage furniture and furnishings in budget-friendly prices. Bangkal Furniture Market [Link previous article] in Makati is one of them. However, it can be quite a hassle to visit this strip when you live way up north of Metro Manila. Just thinking of the heavy traffic and the cost of car gas might discourage you even before you get out of your house. Luckily, you need not go far – you just need to find yourself in the heart of Quezon City. Kamuning Road and Cubao Expo are the places to be for than quality vintage fix.

Like Bangkal, Kamuning Road is a long street filled with enough antique shops to satisfy your vintage thirst. Go by car, start from EDSA corner Kamuning-Kamias Road and stop by each and every house-turned-shop for a treasure hunt like no other. But be patient: because of the abundance of offerings – and in all kinds of conditions, too – you need to have a keen eye and, sometimes, a good stretch of imagination to find what you are looking for.

Once you’ve reached the end of the road, your quest would’ve been completed. Turn right toward Tomas Morato and reward yourself with a drink or a snack from one of the food establishments there.

On the other hand, Cubao Expo is neither a street nor is it located on the main road. Located quite near Alimall and almost along Aurora Blvd., it is an obscure cluster of various shops that offer an array of products: food, shoes, art, clothes, books and, yes, antiques.

Park your car and walk around that looping street. Since the place is small, explore each and every thrift shop there is. Turn it inside-out as you look for the perfect piece for your living room, dining room and bedroom. Take a breather by looking at some vinyl records and well-kept classic books. Chat with the owners, have a snack or two, look at other artwork and give the vintage hunt another go.

Getting to these two places via public transportation is very easy as they are located near EDSA and Aurora Blvd., two main roads in Quezon City. Kamuning Road is always busy as it is a main road itself so expect traffic when visiting there. Cubao Expo is quieter in the morning, but comes to life at night when gigs start. By then, though, shops would’ve had closed already.

So what are you waiting for? Put on your most comfortable shoes and a hat or cap, bring a bottle of water and a liter or more of patience and determination and head over to these places! Your vintage treasure waits!
