Where to place plants in your home

Plants are great additions to your home. They not only help spruce up a tired corner in your space, but they also help you de-stress and purify the air circulating in your home.

According to a study conducted in 2008, researchers found that recovering patients who had plants in their rooms reported lower stress levels than the patients from the control group. Also, they found scientific evidence that certain houseplants helped increase oxygen and purify air.

To help bring back health and vibrancy into your spaces, here's a list of some useful and beautiful plants that deserve a cozy corner in your home.

1. Bamboo Palm – The light and vibrant bamboo palm is particularly effective in removing toxins like benzene and trichloroethylene from air, which is why it made it to NASA’s list of top air-cleaning plants. As they will need space to grow, it is advised to place these plants in a moderate space under the shade, perhaps in your covered lanai.

2. English Ivy – Dubbed as the most effective plant when it comes to absorbing formaldehyde, English ivy is incredibly pretty, it is easy to maintenance and perfect for busy homeowners. Hang it near an entrance way or place it in a pot on the ground, English ivy will grow freely under medium sunlight and moderate temperatures. These would be best near kitchen windows.

3. Spider plants – Despite the name, spider plants are very common and attractive additions to many gardens and homes. Effective in removing toxins like benzene, xylene, carbon monoxide and formaldehyde, the spider plant is easily adaptable and needs very minimal attention. Water it a few times during the week and its good for months. These can be placed anywhere in the home that needs sprucing up, from the living room or dining room or even bathrooms.

4. Red-edged dracaena – This is a truly beautiful plant, with its vibrant pink and purple shades that line the edges of every leaf. These plants can grow up to 15 feet so you may need to consider placing it in a space such by a big window in the living room or outdoor lanai. It will also need to be placed under direct sunlight for optimum growth.
